SCS Confers Honorary Degree at Commencement Ceremony

The Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies held its 32nd commencement ceremony on May 19. A total of seventy-three degrees were conferred, including fifty-nine Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degrees and fourteen Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies degrees. One student, Michael Lowe, received the MALS portion of the joint MALS/MD degree with a concentration in Ethics and the Professions. The School of Continuing Studies was founded in 1974 and graduated its first student in 1975.

In keeping with Hoya tradition, Liberal Studies graduates also participated in the university-wide commencement exercises, which took place over May 18 to 20. The university conferred degrees on more than 4,300 scholars in the Class of 2007. About 2,700 of those students received advanced degrees in master's or doctoral programs.

During the commencement ceremony, an honorary doctorate degree was conferred upon Catherine B. Reynolds, one of Business Week's 50 Most Generous Philanthropists. Reynolds is the Founder and Chairman of Loan to Learn, an EduCap Education Loan Program committed to providing privately-funded educational financing as an alternative to government student loan programs. In addition to her work at Loan to Learn, Mrs. Reynolds devotes her time and abilities primarily to philanthropic pursuits as the creator and chairman of one of the largest foundations in the nation. The mission of her foundation is to help educate young people, to inspire them to believe in their power to make a difference as individuals and to motivate them to reach their greatest potential as citizens and productive members of society.

Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia conferred the degree, noting that Reynolds’ profound commitment to education, innovation, leadership, and service exemplifies the mission and vision of Georgetown University, and that she is a prime example of the Georgetown philosophy to encourage its students and graduates to lead lives of leadership and service.

Drawing from her rich personal and professional background, Reynolds challenged graduates to question the status quo, challenge authority and to always think outside the box. Quoting the motto of her daughter's middle school, Reynolds ended by advising graduates to "find a way or make one."

Anthony J. Tambasco, Ph.D., Professor of Theology and former Chair of the Theology Department and Liberal Studies Core Faculty member, received The Excellence in Teaching Faculty Award.
